ELO vs. League Points for Darts Leagues: Which Is Better?

Points system: simple, but weakens over time

A win counts for 3 points, a loss for 0 – regardless of who was played. At first glance, that's easy to understand. The problem shows up after a few weeks: anyone who plays a lot of matches against weaker opponents climbs quickly, without the leaderboard still saying much about actual skill.

ELO: adapts to opponent strength

With the ELO system, the points you gain depend on how strong the opponent is rated. A win against a stronger player is worth noticeably more than a win against a weaker one – a loss against a weaker player costs correspondingly more. That keeps the leaderboard meaningful over months, even with very different skill levels.

Which one fits when?

• Points system: fits a fixed season with a clear schedule, where everyone plays roughly the same number of matches against each other.
• ELO: fits an open, ongoing league without a fixed schedule – exactly the situation in most offices, where matches happen spontaneously in between.
